The first show on the day 2 of the couture week was resplendent with rich couture garments that lifted the spirits with their sheer colours, cuts and embroidery. The first show was by Anita Dongre who chose to play around the garden embroidery of Gota Patti inspired by the splendid peacock prints of Rajasthan.
Lehengas in rich corals with gold embroidery and deep blue were simply majestic. I liked her play with pockets in almost all the couture dresses. Tapered pants with long capes, Kurtis and the tassels dangling in front of the choli empire line, looked smart and yet bridal. The sarees in gold gota patti were brilliant but tassels dangling at the pallu ends, were a bit too out of sync in certain pieces.
Her collection for men ranged from kurtas teamed with Patiala salwars, Achkans with churidars and the models sported nose rings! Ironically, most of the pieces from her collection have walked the Mumbai ramp for the Make in India campaign.
The second show was Tarun Tahiliani’s collection in association with Swarovski. The ramp smelled of fresh Jasmine, and the grand chandelier in the middle was nothing short of a royal court only that the theme of the show was titled, The Last Dance of the Courtesan.
And Tahiliani once again weaved his magic with recreating the glamour from the lost lanes of courtesans.
True to its word, the collection was magnificent in the divine colors of Indian couture, Reds, Oranges, Black and even Off-whites. A touch of delicate kathak moves by classical exponent Manjari Chaturvedi, added to the entire charm of a visual walk through the times gone by.
The ruling look – mother of pearls coupled with Swarovski crystals on Anarkalis, Dreamy net duppattas, Chikankari in kurtas and lehengas and some Jamavars; the entire collection was nothing short of a bridal entourage with t`he models decked up in traditional Indian jewelry, flowers in the bun and thick kohl lines. A warm tone of the make-up set the right mood.
A long show that witnessed three short Kathak stints in between to bring about the courtesan theme, presented the signature Tahiliani garments in all its grandness and opulence!
