Summer will soon be here and that means it is time to fling open the wardrobe and find those summer essentials. But, what if your summer wardrobe is in need of a revamp? What summer clothes should you buy to see you through into autumn? What clothes will you wear again and again? We are all now aware of reducing our carbon footprint, reusing and recycling household items, and we need to do the same with our clothing. We must all buy our clothes with care.

1. Focus on dresses

Every summer wardrobe needs a few simple dresses. One of the most popular styles to wear is the humble maxi dress. This style of dress is available in a range of colours and patterns, so you can choose a colour that suits you. But, more importantly, they are easy to wear, fuss-free and will keep you cool. Just add sandals and a sun hat. Then, when the weather begins to cool you can transform the look by adding a belt to create a more shapely dress. Wear a knitted cardigan or jacket and cute boots.

2. Vests, cotton tees and big shirts

It’s a good idea to keep tops plain and simple so that they can be teamed with a range of colourful shorts and skirts. Short sleeved tee shirts will keep you cool while being low maintenance. They can be worn in the autumn with a cardigan or under a woolly jumper in the winter months. You also can’t go far wrong with a simple oversized white cotton shirt.

Brands like ASOS are highly conscious of their carbon footprint, and
are paving the way for sustainable clothing. In 2017 they used 71 percent more sustainable cotton in their clothing, including the white cotton shirt. The large white cotton shirt can be worn with shorts when you’re on the beach, and then during the colder months swap those shorts for leggings or skinny jeans.

3. Wear shorts

We all look forward to summer when we can wear those summer shorts. So every summer wardrobe needs to have a few pairs ready for you to pop on. But, what style should you wear to see you through the rest of the year? Well, there are two styles that will do just the trick. Firstly, if you don’t like to wear your shorts too short, opt for short culottes. These will keep you cool and are flattering. Then, simply add tights and boots for winter. The second style is the classic pair of denim shorts, especially if you love all things vintage. These will look fab with strappy sandals in summer and then swap for leggings and ankle boots in the autumn.

4. The versatile summer sandal
It can be difficult to know what type of summer shoe you should buy. Flip flops are lightweight, but they are also throw away shoes, not good if we are trying to be kinder to our planet. A good alternative is to opt for leather sandals. These are durable, long lasting and can be worn with pretty much everything. Team them with shorts, maxi dresses and cool linen trousers during the summer months. Then, when the cooler autumnal air begins to creep in, simply wear black or grey thick tights to keep you warm. If you opt for open toe sandals they may even take you into winter. You can then resurrect them during late spring.
